OH TO VACATiON LiKE THE RiCH DO…i GOT TO PARTAKE
this summer i have had several opportunities to travel a little bit with my styling work. the best trip this year was when i got to have my handsome boyfriend tag along up to the beautiful wine country of NAPA. i tend to forget how breath taking the wine country is and it’s so close to the city. not only did we get to stay in NAPA but we stayed in the most luxourious resort there – AUBERGE du SOLEiL (www.aubergedusoleil.com). i love when i can talk BRiAN, my boyfriend, (www.sosuperduper.com) into coming along on my photo shoots and helping me create beauty. he is such a huge help in handing me brushes, straightening up my large messes, and telling me what I need to do to better the looks i create.
the photographer i got to work with was TRiNETTE REED (www.trinettereed.com) who specializes in spa photography – she makes stunning photos. The craziest thing was that I was recommended for this job by my stylist friend – who also styled the shoot – PAULiNE MONTUPET (www.paulinemontupet.com) but i had worked with TRiNETTE 4 years prior. her studio did photo shoots with the students of the cosmetology school i attend, SFiEC (www.sfiec.com). so you could say that she sort of worked on my first photo shoot ever. it was a long three day shoot with basically 12 hour days, we shot until the sun went down – thanks goodness the accomendations where no less than 5 stars! i was happy with how this shoot really pushed me in creating beautiful up.styles that weren’t “everyday”. i also had to make sure that they were clean, fresh, sophisticated and quiet – something that i most the time am not with my work.
i was definitely lucky to work in such a gorgeous area of california, share it with my boyfriend, and indulge in a superb resort with delicious food for every meal.

THREE DAYS OF BRUSHES…iT’S TRUE
there is a brush out there that can be an angel from heaven for those with curly frizzy hair who want to remove or lessen their natural waves – it’s the MONROE (¬the brand name) BOAR BRISTLE BRUSH. these brushes have bristles that are placed in tightly knit groups that gives the brush the ability to really grip on to the hair and help you in the process of stretching out your hair and making it straight.
when you purchase or go to use a brush you already have you need to consider what the final style you want to create is. if you are looking to remove wave and get rid of your curl you will want a larger barrel brush. if what you are longing for is volume with wave or curl in your hair you want to use smaller barrel brush.

BRUSH CHAT CONTiNUES.
ROUND BRUSHES, now those words make my heart skip a beat – i love styling hair with a round brush. using a round brush correctly gives the hair volume, bounce, shine, and wave that can last all day (given the texture of your hair is curl friendly), and no other tools are needed – maybe just a little hair spray.
CRiCKET (the brand name) TOURMALiNE ROUND BRUSHES are one of my favorite tools, i would venture to say that 85 percent of my blow drying at the salon are done with these puppies. the tourmaline is gentle on your hair and heats up to really help in the drying process. the vents, or holes, through out the brush helps the heat to attack all your hair while wrapped around the brush, which also makes your drying time get cut in half.
round brushes can be quite intimidating to those who haven’t use them before. there is always that lurking fear of getting the brush stuck in your lovely locks. the easiest way to use this tool is to start by using your hands and your dryer, your paddle brush and dryer, or vent brush and dryer to get your hair 85 to 90 percent dry. while you are doing this you will want to make sure that you are blowing the cuticle closed or better words: direct the air down the hair shaft. doing this will make sure you create less frizz in your hair. once you have accomplished this procedure, your work is almost much done. section your hair off with clips – this will give you better control over your hair, especially if it is long. i recommend at least four sections in the front and 4 sections in the back (you can always do more depending on the thickness of your hair). now that your hair is almost dry all you have to do is wrap the section of hair around the brush and hit it with the blow dryer until it is 100 percent dry. there is no having to pull or tug with the brush, all you have to concentrate on is just getting the rest of the hair completely dry. the trick to a round brush not getting tangles in you hair is making sure that the hair is fully dry. the brush WiLL NOT get stuck in dry hair….if it’s a little damp you may have some problems.

SO MANY BRUSHES TO CHOOSE FROM…
picking the right brush to create the correct look for you hair can be quite a chore, especially since there is a wide variety of brushes out there to choose from. i thought that i would take a couple posts to talk about my favorite brushes, what i use them for, and the looks that they can help you attain.
the DENMAN (¬this is the brand name) PADDLE BRUSH/DENMAN VENT BRUSH. these are great brushes that i use in the salon to help dry the hair quickly and use in straightening out the hair. by pulling the hair away from the scalp with these two brushes and using your blow dryer to force the hair in it’s opposite direction creates volume to the crown of your head. the PADDLE BRUSH is used more for longer hair and for helping to straighten the hair. the VENT BRUSH is great for shorter hair, creating volume, and helps to dry the hair faster by allowing the air from your hair dryer through the vents. I will usually team these brushes with some sort of hot tool after I dry the to create a polished look, a flat iron or curling iron will always help to tame the frizz left from a blow dryer.
you can purchase both of these brushes from my favorite hair tool website – www.folica.com, where you can get salon quality products for a much cheaper price. BRiLLANT!

HOW WiLL YOU LOOK AT THE END OF THE WORLD?
CHRiSTOPHER KERN (www.ckalltheway.com) is back in town and i am a happy little make.up boy to have my bestest friend back and shooting. in the good old CHRiSTOPHER fashion he lined us up a fun little editorial job with the magazine BiG UP (www.bigupmagazine.com). it’s such a fun magazine that has been covering music and art – and now adding fashion.
our models were from the super kind and sweet agency JE models (www.jemodels.com). NEEAMAH is such a gorgeous girl and i am completely jealous of her crazy fantastic hair. if i had her hair i would totally be rocking the big gigantic FRO for sure. NiCHOLAS was one of their new models and had such a unique look, i forgot to take a picture of him with my cool hipstamatic application…sad, guess i have to wait until i get the final images from CHRiSTOPHER to see him in his modeling debut.
the clothing for the shoot was provided by an ultra hip and totally groovy boutique”ish” store in lower haight, D-STRUCTURE (www.d-structuresf.com). the shock of the day for me was the cute store boy who stepped in to model when the other two models got booked for other jobs and didn’t make it. he did such a great job and really captured the “MAD MAX” vibe we were going for.
i loved working with CHRiSTOPHER and his great team (MiCHAEL NiELAND – www.nielandphoto.com). magic happens when you get a great team together and creates such a fun atmosphere. i have to say that i was really lucky to have a superb assistant today, TEDDi CHANOS. she is a graduate from my alma mater SFiEC (www.sfiec.com) and getting ready to embark on her journey into the world of hair styling. i look forward to working with her again and perhaps helping move forward and inspire her in her future career.

14 and THiS BEAUTiFUL….iT’S UNFAiR!!!
it’s so exciting when you get finished work back…there’s nothing harder to do then wait for something that you are terribly excited for. it’s like CHRiSTMAS, it never seems to come fast enough! tonight while having dinner with my super handsome boyfriend i got an e-mail from ms. JENNA HUNT ALCALA (www.jennaalcala.com) informing me that a zip file was being sent to my e-mail address where i could download the images from our shoot a couple weeks ago. i wanted to down that thai food and get my booty home to rip open my zip file present and see the beauty that we created! i am so happy with the outcome — iCHRiSTiNE from FORD (www.fordmodels.com) is stunning and JENNA’s skills are unbelievable. i am so lucky to be able to work with such skilled and glamorous people!

MY FAVORiTE MUSE
i get so excited to work with inspiring people that really get me excited about what i do and expressing my self in what we are creating. today i got to work with the super fun BRYAN DAViS (www.bryandavisimages.com) and one of my most favorite models EVER, the drop dead gorgeous BROOKE LONDON from FORD. BRYAN is a master of photo shop and wanted to do something water inspired, meaning he was going to add all the water elements in after we shot BROOKE. since the back drop and clothing were super simple i wanted to do a little photo shoot with my fabulous iPHONE app called hipstimatic to show off my fun work and what a great day we had (I am not much of a photographer but they turned out pretty awesome). plus it will be super cool to see how different the images turn out after the magic that is BRYAN DAViS.

MENSiES…i love them
i have been using DAViNES (www.davines.com) MATTE MOULDiNG GESSO on my male clients for the last 5 years and have been hard pressed to find anything thing that compared. when we started carrying SEBASTiAN (www.sebastian.com) several months ago i was forced to try another product when we were out of my favorite DAViNES product, i choose to try their CRAFT CLAY. i must say that i was blown away by the product and the way it styled hair. i love the heavy feeling and dry texture that still leaves your hair movable but standing.
